Local Walk

Stanwick Lakes

Have you eaten toooo much Christmas pudding?

Do you still have a hangover from New Years Eve?

Would you like to get fitter ?

If so why not join Northants 20/30's walking group……..and their hangovers......on the first walk of the new year.

Start Point: The car park at Stanwick Lakes (Grid Ref: SP 970 713). To get to Stanwick from Northampton take the A45, Stanwick is just past Wellingborough and Rushden. Meet at 10.30am.

Stanwick Lakes has been converted from archaeological excavations to an area of wildlife conservation and natural beauty with a population of waterfowl, dragonflies and even otters.

It is a figure of 8 walk of 9 miles in total, you can do just the morning or afternoon or both halves.

We will do 5 miles in the morning, walking around the country park, passing through the historical "Addingtons", returning to the car park via the Nene way to meet any people who wish to join us for the afternoon walk. Those who only wish to walk in the morning can then make their way home.

The afternoon walk will be 4 miles taking in more of the Nene way country side with its rolling Northamptonshire hills. We will make our way over fields towards Rushden and Diamonds football club, touching the outskirts of Irthingborough perched on the banks of the river Nene.

We will pass though further examples of interesting Northamptonshire countryside, evenually returning to the car park.

Those who wish to join us for the afternoon only should meet at the car park at 12.30, where we will be having lunch.

We hope you will join us!!........Go on you know you want to……………

Car park fee £2.00

There is a catering wagon serving, tea, coffee hot and cold snacks.

Sunday 13th

National Walk

An 8½ mile walk from the picturesque Cotswold village of Ashton Under Hill, taking in Elmley Castle (including remains of the castle itself), Bredon Hill and a section of the Wychavon Way.

Meet at 10.30 outside St Barbara's Church in Ashton under Hill (Grid Ref SO 997 377), after parking thoughtfully around the village.

Or meet at Northampton station (large car park to the side) at 8.45am for car sharing.

To get there from Northampton my suggested route is - Towcester, Brackley, Banbury, Chipping Norton, Broadway, Evesham, Ashton Under Hill - This takes about an hour and a half. You will approach via the A46 Evesham to Cheltenham road, the village is a turning off this on the right. You will then approach along Groaten Lane, the church is directly in front of you, turn right for the best parking up the hill (Elmley Road) or left for more parking along Beckford Road.

Having parked head to the church on foot - this is marked by a very obvious sign (if you have walked down the hill from your car to the church you will then walk up it again when the walk starts!)

Please note that the pub in Elmley Castle is closed - which means no pub stop on the walk!!

It is also worth mentioning that this is a hilly walk - in case you hadn't guessed from the name of the village - with a total ascent of 462m

Sunday 20th

Local Walk

An easy figure of eight walk starting from Stoke Bruerne, a picturesque village to the SW of Northampton.

The morning walk will be about 4.5 miles and take in the villages of Ashton and Roade, the afternoon loop of 4 miles will pass through Stoke Bruerne Park and Shutlanger.

There is no parking in the village as it is all double yellow lines so best place to park is in the museum car park (signposted once you reach the village) - £2.50 charge for the day (the machine may not be working so leave time to pay in the shop). Grid Reference SP 743 497

Meet next to the museum car park, by the canal, at 10:30am for the morning walk (or all day) or at 1:15pm for the afternoon walk. If you are coming along to the afternoon walk only then please let us know so we can look out for you.

For lunch, there is an area to eat sandwiches etc, or there is a café and a couple of pubs nearby.

Local Walk

Meet at 10.30am in the small car park in Salcey Forest (grid ref SP 810 508).

This is NOT the main car park where the toilets/cafe is.

Directions from Northampton : take the B526 Newport Pagnell Road, go through Hackleton and Horton and turn right on a corner sign posted Salcey Forest. The car park is the first parking area on the left hand side, if you reach the crossroads you have gone to far.

In the morning we will walk about 5 miles towards Hanslope and back across fields.

Please bring a pack lunch. If you would just like to do the afternoon please meet in the same car park at 1.30pm.

In the afternoon we will walk about 5 miles around Salcey Forest tracks stopping at the cafe for afternoon tea and cake before returning back to the cars.

National Walk

An 8 mile circular walk in the Chiltern Hills from Tring Station.

Rather than car sharing there is the option of using public transport to get to this walk, which you are encouraged to do. Meet at Northampton Railway Station by 9am for travel to the walk by public transport - catching the 9.10am (rail replacement) bus to Milton Keynes which arrives there at 9.55, then the 10.12 train from MK, arriving Tring 10.37am. Cheap day return costs £12.80 for the whole journey.

Alternatively, if you are not able to reasonably travel by train, meet at Tring Station to meet the 10.37 train. The car park offers free parking on a Sunday. Grid ref SP951122.

Driving directions from Northampton - head out on A45 to join Junction 15 of M1 head south and exit at Junction 11 Dunstable. Follow A505 to Dunstable noting speed cameras on way then follow B489 to Aston Clinton/Tring continuing until you reach a left turn signposted B488. Follow to roundabout then take 1st exit marked Northfield Road, follow to T junction turning right onto Station Road - car park is on left hand site (approx 1hr 10 mins drive).

We start the walk following the ancient Ridgeway national trail (very muddy in places) through Albury Nowers heading up to the Ivinghoe Beacon, one of the most well known viewpoints in the Chiltern Hills, for some breathtaking views of the surrounding area - with a valentines treat being provided for the ladies during this part of the walk. (This section approximately 3.5 miles)

For lunch please bring a packed lunch.

We'll then descend the Beacon for a woodland stroll through a pleasant trail of beech trees (a perfect setting for this valentines walk) to Pistone common where the impressive 106ft high Bridgewater monument is situated. We will stop here at the cafe for tea & cake.We then head downhill to the beautiful English village of Aldbury with its quintessential pond, church & pubs for a well earned drink for all!

Finally we will follow a trail past a golf course back to the station (This section approximately 4.5 miles).

Think there's something on it for everyone - hills, amazing views, some sheep, a stile, cake & a fine pub!!

Sunday 30th

National Walk

DON'T FORGET THE CLOCKS GO FORWARD FOR BRITISH SUMMER TIME !

Meet at 10.30am (BST) outside the village hall in Brailes, grid reference SP 308 394.

Alternatively meet at Northampton station at 9.15am for car sharing.

Brailes is a pretty village in Warwickshire, very close to Shipston on Stour and not far from Banbury.

The walk is approximately 10 miles and takes in the village of Middle Tysoe where there is a pub stop for lunch. My parents are checking the pub out, my dad may even be forced to have a pint. I would advise people to take a packed lunch etc as not sure what the catering facilities will be like. The return from Middle Tysoe is via Compton Wynates and Windmill Hill.

Directions: From Northampton I would take the A43 to Brackley, then the A422 to Banbury. From Banbury go straight over the M40 roundabout, then straight over the next three roundabouts, go past Tesco's (on your right), go straight over the first mini roundabout (by Tescos) and straight over the second mini roundabout, then on the third mini roundabout go left (its by a row of shops and a T junction) then go immediately right on another mini- roundabout. Go straight up the next road, go over the first larger roundabout you come to (its by a pub) and then turn right at the second large roundabout - this is the Broughton Road and leads directly to Lower and Upper Brailes - signposted Shipston on Stour, although if you have reached Shipston you have gone too far. (This is the quick route through Banbury which avoids the town centre itself)

We may not be able to park at the village hall (although it does have a car park) so please find somewhere to park in the village itself. My parents are, as I write, checking this out, and you never know they may find a good parking space for us in the village. The village hall is pretty central in the village and at least couple of hundred yards after the first pub you come to in lower Brailes.

Sun has been booked in especially for that day so I am not expecting rain.

Sunday 13th

Local Walk

Meet in the centre of Nether Heyford at 10.30am, by the telephone box at the bottom of the village green, opposite the One Stop shop - grid reference is SP656582.

To get there turn left off the A45 from Northampton (after crossing JCT 16) into Upper Heyford, drive down to Nether Heyford to the centre of the village, where you will see a large village green, bear right and park around or near the green.

The walk will be 8-ish miles, from Nether Heyford, crossing Watling Street, and going on to Church Stowe, following part of the Macmillan Way, to Farthingstone, then on to Litchborough.

We will have lunch either in Farthingstone or Litchborough, but bring a packed lunch as there may not be suitable food facilities in either pub. On then to Upper Stowe, where, if there is time we can have a look at the Old Dairy Farm centre, (maybe a cup of tea, if the place is open!) and returning to Nether Heyford.

Interesting features to look out for on the walk: rabbits, a scenic view from a bench, a small flock of Guinea Fowl, this years' lambs, and a spooky tunnel - and here's the exciting bit - we get to go through the spooky tunnel twice, so there will be no excuse for anyone not to see it !

NO DOGS ON THIS WALK PLEASE - On this occasion we ask that if any of you may have been planning to bring dogs on the walk, please can you leave them at home. The reason for this is not to be anti-dog, but when walk leader Jenni reccied the walk she crossed a number of fields containing ewes and lambs, and in fact in one particular field was mobbed by 5 very hungry and noisy lambs who must've presumed she'd come to feed them - so, we don't want to chance any adverse ovine encounters this weekend, however well behaved or harnessed up the dog may be, thank you !

Local Walk

Meeting point Kinewell Lake Pocket Park, Ringstead at 10.30am. Grid Reference: SP 981 750

Approximately 9.5 miles taking in the villages of Ringstead, Little Addington, Great Addington and Woodford. There are a few pubs en-route so hopefully we will be able to stop off for a pint but please bring a packed lunch.

As it's Hayley's birthday on the day of the walk there will hopefully be some birthday cake baked by the Young Ramblers answer to Jane Asher (Gayle).

Directions From Northampton - take the A45 (past Wellingborough and Rushden) and take the roundabout for Ringstead. When you come to the junction on the edge of Ringstead (nearly opposite the pub) turn left and go through the village. At the end of the village you will go past derestricted signs, just past these signs on the right is the entrance to Kinewell Lake Pocket Park. Unfortunately the entrance is not well marked. There is no charge for parking.

From Kettering take the A14 to Thrapston and pick up the A45.

Sunday 27th

National Walk

Wandlebury Ring and Magog Hills, Cambridgeshire.

A 9.5 mile walk starting at Magog Down Car park. The walk takes in Cambridgeshire's low lying chalk farmland of the Granta Valley and the Villages of Stapleford and Sawston. The Second half of the walk takes us into the village of Babraham for a pub stop and then to take in the small, but very picturesque Babraham Hall, before crossing the fields and taking Mile Road (old roman road) up to Copley Hill (Bronze Age Barrow) and Meggs Hill. We then take the Via Devana (another roman road) to Wandlebury Ring, an Iron Age hillfort, before heading across Magog Down back to the cars. The walk is easy going.

Meeting / Parking: Meet for car sharing at 9.10am at Northampton Station (the large car park at the side) or at 10.30am at the Magog Downs car park (OS Grid Ref: TL 487 531). There are two car parks on the map, that are quite close together, The main car park is at Wandlebury Ring, there is a charge (PLEASE do not park there!!). The car park to use is the Magog Downs car park (which is free), which if you follow the below directions will be the first carpark you reach (Hopefully!).

Directions: Assuming you are taking the A14, M11, Take Junction 11 of M11 and follow signs for Park And Ride (Trumpington), you should be on the A1309, the park and ride will be on your left, continue on this road until you reach a set of traffic lights (turn right at the lights)sign posted A1301, stay on this road through the village of Great Shelford (there is continuous housing along this road, keep going until you reach Stapleford, stay on the A1301 until you reach a pub on the left hand side, take a left here, on to Bury Road. (If you are on the A1301 and reach open country side you've gone to far turn around and just as you re-enter Stapleford the pub will be on your right). Stay on this road, which will take a sharp left and become Haverhill Road, carry on out of the village. The car park is about 1/2-3/4 mile up the road on your right there is a small black and white sign post on the left (much like the public foot path signs) that indicates the car park entrance. If you miss it you will reach a T Junction onto a busy road(A1307) and sign posted Wandlebury Ring, if so turn round as soon as possible.

For those with sat nav, post code CB22 5BX or CB22 5FX will get you to Haverhill Road.

Wednesday 21st

Evening Walk

Meet for a 7.30 start at the Malt Shovel Tavern on Bridge St in Northampton.

The walk takes us along the Nene Way, following the river, past the new flats and into Becketts Park, where we may see some squirrels. We continue into Midsummer Meadow, taking the recently opened £357,000 riverside walk.

After crossing Barnes Meadow we reach a section of flood channel, within which we should see some recently hatched cygnets - when we reccied the walk in early April the swans had a large clutch of eggs in their nest, they should be hatched by the time of the walk.

After this we return along the main river channel and past the whitewater / canoeing course, before returning via a slightly different route through Barnes Meadow, Midsummer Meadow and the park and then back along the riverside.

The walk in total is approx 4 miles, we should be back at the pub by 9.30 at the latest.

As this is a town pub they will not appreciate muddy boots, but this shouldn't be an issue as barring extreme weather before the walk it will be do-able in trainers with no mud to see as it is mostly on hard paths and just a bit of grass.

On returning to the pub we will see blues performed by "The Rob Tognoni Band" so the pub will be fairly crowded. However that shouldn't stop us sampling the impressive array of real ales!

There is no parking at the Malt Shovel - you can park for free fairly near at St Peters Way (near Argos) or you can probably get away with parking next to the pub in Morrisons on a 2 hour ticket (costs £1) - they close at 9 and its doubtful anyone will check after then (but we accept no liability if you get clamped!). Alternatively there is the St John's multi storey which is 80p for all evening.

Zermatt

SORRY - NOW FULLY BOOKED

The plan is to fly to Geneva and get the train from Geneva to Zermatt.

Zermatt is one of the mountaineering Capitals of the Europe, very picturesque, car free, famous for The Matterhorn which dominates the sky line.

Geneva takes 4 hours by train, you can check luggage all the way through to Zermatt and the train station is very close to the airport at Geneva. We will have to change trains at either Brig or Visp to the BVZ ( Brig, Visp, Zermatt ) which is a Cog wheel train that will take us up the valley to Zermatt. trains depart geneva every hour Second Class price 178.00 Swiss francs for return (Approx £80.00) per person.

Driving takes 3.5 hours, but Zermatt is car free so we would not need cars. There is plenty to do in Zermatt so we would not need to go anywhere in a car, lots of tourist attractions involve the use of trains and cable cars.

There are lots of beautiful walks to do plus ascent of the Breithorn ( 4164m only for those with experience of crampons) for those daring ones !!!

Local Walk

Maidwell

A figure of 8 walk starting from the Draughton Crossing car park on the Brampton Valley Way at 10:30am for the morning, and 13:15pm for the afternoon. (Grid Ref. SP 756 773, Directions Below).

The morning will be approx 5 miles heading south down the Brampton Valley Way towards Lamport, then across rolling hills and back to Maidwell via the Macmillan Way.

The afternoon will start from the same car park and be approx 4 miles long. It will either head east and take in the village of Draughton, or head west towards Maidwell Lodge; I haven't decided which is nicest yet!

Lunch will be on the picnic tables at the car park so please bring food; we'll stop at the pub after the walk.

As this is a figure of 8 walk you have the option of doing either the morning or the afternoon, or both halves.

Directions from Northampton:- Take the A508 towards Market Harborough, which goes past Lamport and then to Maidwell. As soon as you reach Maidwell take the first right turn (signposted Draughton). This is Draughton Road and will take you to the car park; please be aware it's a fairly narrow lane and does have traffic in both directions. You should see "Draughton Crossing Car Park" signposted on the left. If you reach Draughton village you've gone too far!

Directions from Kettering or from M1 Junction 19 :- Take the A14 to the A508 junction and then take the A508 towards Northampton. The village of Maidwell is only 1 mile down the A508, the road to Draughton as described above is on the left in the village.

Local Walk

Figure of 8 walk - Option of walking 4.5 miles (morning or afternoon) or 8-9 miles (all day).

Starting and ending at Cogenhoe.

The first half taking in the villages of Denton and skirting Whiston, through rolling Northamptonshire countryside.

The second half taking in Little Houghton, where we drop down into the Nene Valley, past Clifford motte, then going along part of the Macmillan way that goes along the Nene, skirting past the caravans at Billing Aquadrome!

Parking thoughtfully around the village, meet at 10.30 am at the Londis Convenience stores, Station Road, Cogenhoe. Those who wish to join the second half to meet at 1.00 - 1.15 at the Londis Convenience stores in Cogenhoe.

Bring a packed lunch, lunch will be in Cogenhoe. A warning for those of a nervous disposition, and for those who like to be scared, there are two 'spooky foresty bits' to go through on the first half, and we'll be passing through Cogenhoe Pocket Park, which is slightly spooky also. And on the second half we may be lucky to see swans, geese and minnows on or in the Nene, and there are 'goose footprints' - all will be revealed on the day (don't get too excited..)

8 - 9 miles distance in total.

There is no car park and the village is quite small so please park considerately... Thank you.

The morning walk is 6 miles and is very easy walking heading west towards Sibbertoft before heading north towards Marston Trussell, then back across country to Clipston - mainly single track, very quiet country lanes and takes in some of the battle sites of the Battle of Naseby. There are excellent views across this part of Northamptonshire.

Lunch will be on the village green, before heading to the Old Red Lion for a pint. Those wishing to join us for the afternoon only should meet at the pub at 1.00pm.

The afternoon walk is approx 6 miles and heads North across country to East Farndon before following the Jurassic Way into Great Oxendon before heading back to Clipston. Again this is a mixture of very quiet country lanes and across fields

Meet in the car park within the grounds of Stowe Park / House (also signposted as Stowe Gardens). This is free parking on the large grass verge to the left of the main drive; please go as far up the drive as you can before parking as that is where the walk will start.

The morning is approx 4.5 miles and goes north through woodland towards Silverstone, skirting the lower part of the circuit (outside the fence though don't worry!), then back via Stowe Woods.

The afternoon is approx 4.5 miles too and we'll explore the deer park and various towers / obelisks of the grounds before heading south towards Chackmore and returning via bridlepaths.

Please bring a packed lunch; there may only be a pub stop after the walk.

Stowe Gardens and tea rooms are also open - the National Trust gardens will be open until 5.30pm, an admission charge of £6.20 applies. The gardens take 2 hours approx so there may just be time to do these after the walk, or if you only do the morning half.

It is approx 3 miles round the gardens and well worth a visit. The tea shop closes at 5pm but if you get in by then they let you stay until 5.30 to finish your tea!

The house is only open for a guided tour, which is at 2pm so could be done if you do the morning walk only. This costs £9.00 if combined with the gardens. Although the house is quite interesting the gardens are really the thing to see.

Compulsory Santa Hat Walk

Olney

To get into the Christmas spirit this walk will be combined with a visit to the Olney "Dickens of A Christmas" Christmas Market. To allow sufficent time to see this, this will now be a morning walk only (the previously advertised afternoon half of what was a figure of 8 has therefore been scrapped). There will be food for sale within the market so no need for a packed lunch.

Meet adjacent to the Christmas Market (by the toilets on the main road) in the centre of Olney at 10.30am. Grid Ref SP 889 512.

The walk is 5 miles and takes in Emberton Country Park, Filgrave and Emberton. Features include Filgrave Clock Tower and some scary cows! The latter can be bypassed if necessary although this means also bypassing the former!! There is an optional extension to the walk bringing it to 6.3 miles and taking in the river Great Ouse.

As the Christmas market is on parking will no doubt be difficult, so use the Park & Ride sites located at Emberton Park and the Yardley Road Industrial Site, both only just outside the town. For those coming from Northampton Yardley Road will be the one to use. Please ensure you arrive at the park and ride car parks in time to get to the start for 10.30. They are only just on the edge of the town so you could walk if there are queues for the buses. It will be very busy so allow for extra journey time, add an extra 45 minutes to your usual time to get to Olney.

Please note that Santa hats are required to be worn by all !
