Local Walk Figure of 8 - 4 miles in the morning and less than 4 in the afternoon Meet near the Coffee Pot pub in Yardley Gobian at 10:30 for 10:45 start, there is quite a quite a bit of space around for parking considerately as ever Coming from Northampton take the first Yardley Gobian turning on the right, bear left into the village and you will see the pub on the main road. In the morning we will be be doing a loop of around 4 miles to the east of the village. It is typical Northamptonshire rolling countryside with some nice views and fairly flat. There is a short stretch of road walking at the mid point of the walk when heading towards Cosgrove but we will then spend some time walking alongside the Grand Union Canal before heading back across some fields and back to Yardley Gobian for approximately 12:30-12:45. We may be able to utilize the outdoor seating at the pub for sandwich eating but am still waiting for them to confirm but there is space nearby if not. The pub does have a log fire for getting warmed up and some real ales! The afternoon walk will start at approximately 1:30pm (meet at the pub) and will be a loop of just less than 4 miles to the west of the village. We will start off heading towards Potterspury across mainly fields but also sections of woodland walking. We will go through White Rose farm and if they are still there near some friendly horses before going across some more fields and then back into the village from the opposite side for approximately 3:15-3:30 finish. We will leave the park and visit the Green Man at Eversholt for a quick drink, and hopefully they will let us eat our packed lunch in their large beer garden. In the afternoon we will walk through woods before heading back through another part of the deer park, close to Woburn Abbey. The pub has plenty of outdoor seating and the landlord is more than happy for us to utilize aforementioned picnic benches to eat our sandwiches and glug our ale. The Warf Inn is a great dog friendly pub boasting a tantalising array of real ales.....most worthy of note on my last visit was a cheeky little number called Mad Jaffa standing at 7%!! A few of those and standing you wont be! The afternoon portion of the walk will be a shorter relaxed 3.5 mile loop taking in parts of the Grand Union Canal and views of the surrounding area. The walk offers gentle undulations but nothing strenuous. Maps of walk start:- Walk leader: Emma Walk leader: Emma |

Local Walk A 10 mile walk starting at 10:30am from Staverton Village Green Grid Ref: SP 539 612 (please park thoughtfully around the green). There are a few green spaces in Staverton; the one to meet at has a cute little well-type thing on it! (and is shown on the map below). Travel time is about 25 mins from the centre of Northampton; for most people coming off or across the M1 at J16, then taking the A45 towards Daventry, then the A425 towards Staverton / Southam might be the best way of getting there. The morning spell of 5.5 miles will follow the Jurassic Way, although we never saw any Dinosaurs on the recce, and Ian was quite unhappy about this : ( . There is a good view of Catesby Viaduct before heading into the nice little village of Hellidon though. We pass a retired Windmill and continue on the Jurassic Way into Charwelton; this will be our lunch stop where sandwiches and pork pie can be eaten outside the pub in the garden at the back; please bring a packed lunch (Pork pie optional!). The afternoon will be 4.5 miles and goes to Church Charwelton, Fawsley Hall and Badby Wood (we will bypass an incident encountered on the recce where Mel got marooned on a plateau of brambles between a cow hareem + Bull, barbed-wire fence, electric fence and large pig!). After Bady Wood we return to Staverton to relive the walk features over a glass of Ale (or T and Squash and Hot Chocolate for Mel). There are quite a few stiles on the walk and some of them are not in the best of condition so please be careful on the day! Maps of walk start:- Ian and Mel leaders |

National Walk The walk takes in the stunning scenery of the Malborough downs, ancient burial mounds and stone circles for which the area is famous. The walk will start from the National Trust car park in Avebury village at 10.30, grid reference 099696. Unfortunately the village is residents only so this is the only parking available. It's £5 for the day unless you are a National Trust member. The walk will take us through the picturesque village of Avebury before heading north towards the village of Winterbourne Monkton. Turning west the next point of interest will be Windmill Hill which is a ancient burial site. The site offers a commanding 360 degree view of the surrounding countryside and is a heritage site. The walk continues heading south back towards Avebury with the distictive flat topped Silbury Hill in the distance. Once back in Avebury the lunch stop will be at the National Trust cafe. Its very nice and serves good food. However it is a bit on the pricey side. There are plenty of picnic benches dotted about. From there the walk will head out of Avebury east. Taking in half of its famous stone circle. The walk will then turn south heading towards the A4. The A4 is a busy road so care must be taken when crossing it. Once over the road the walk will then curve round heading west again past West Kennet Long Barrow (another burial site) before heading back north, The A4 must then be crossed again at Silbury Hill. This is a famous land mark in the area and can be seen for miles. The walk will then head back to the car park. The walk will officially end there however people are free to go off and do some more exploring. There are various museums and little eating places dotted about. It is a fantastic part of the Country and is my home turf so to speak. So it will be great to share it with you all. Some important pieces of information. The walk has very little in the way of shade. There are a couple of places where I intend to have my drink stops but the area is very exposed so sun screen will be essential as well as plenty of water. A hat would also be a good idea. Weirdly for such a hilly area the walk doesn't have many hills. There is one steep climb to the top of Windmill Hill but thats about it. Car sharing. Departure from Northampton should be no later than 8.30.. Anyone wishing to car share should meet at Sixfields in the usual way (near Frankie and Bennies) Maps of walk start:- Justin leader |

Pub Meet & Evening Walk Meet at the Three Cranes in Great Cransley for a 7.30 departure, the walk will head out through Cransley Wood and then to Loddington, before returning across the fields to Great Cransley. Bluebell Walk This will be a six mile walk taking in reservoirs, bluebell woods and a canal but rather than eating our sandwiches for lunch we will end by having a full Sunday lunch! We will be eating at the Lady Lane Canal Club, in Earslwood, Warwickshire. The price is £6.50 and you get a good plateful for the price. This is also the meeting point for the walk (meet on the road outside), the car park is very busy, but we can park on the lane nearby, suggested place for this is just over the canal bridge from the club. Setting off at 10.30, the walk will take us along the canal, along a short road section and then around the lakes and into the bluebell woods. From reccies over the last couple of weekends there should be a good show of bluebells. We then return past the lakes and to the club. We should be back at the club for 2pm. We have now booked for those who want to eat, there may be space for a couple more but not many. Anyone who hasn't booked is welcome to come along on the walk, of course. For car sharing meet at Sixfields near Frankie and Bennies at 9.00 am for a 9.15 am departure. This will be a final walk near Nik's long term home before she joins Andy in Rugby! Now Fully Booked |
Canal Trip - May 4th to 7th 2012 (Bank Holiday) Now Fully Booked Does anyone fancy a slightly different weekend away? We've walked along them enough times so thought we would offer the chance to spend a weekend using them as they were first intended (albeit without the horses and heavy industrial loads!)...We are making plans to spend the early May bank holiday weekend cruising along one of England's beautiful and historic canals, on a barge (of course!). The final choice of canal and barge can only really be determined once we know final numbers, as most boatyards only have a couple of larger barges (and the bigger the boats the cheaper it will be), and different barges obviously occupy different numbers. So we need to first get an idea of what interest there is for this trip... focusing on canals within a 2.5 hour drive from Northampton, there are a couple of options:- Option 1 - Location of possibly the Oxford Canal (south part) near Oxford itself, or the Kennet and Avon canal, with their pretty villages and scenery. A cost of approximately £140-160 per person, for three nights accommodation (Fri-Sun), including fuel, car parking, damage waivers and breakfast and lunch food. For a barge for 10-12 people the bathroom ratio would be 2 toilets and 2 showers on board. For this price the boatyards appear to be the more popular locations. Option 2 - Significantly cheaper cost of approximately £80-90 per person, for three nights accommodation (Fri-Sun), including the same items as above, but location likely to be less 'sought after', (but depends who you're asking!), e.g. the less popular parts of the Oxford canal, or less touristy canals such as those nearer to Northampton, or even rivers, but still in many cases with the expected features of locks, canalside pubs etc and still with nice villages and scenery. The bathroom ratio is more likely to be 1 shower for 10-12 people but still two toilets (although we will have all day to get showered as going nowhere fast!). All barges will have a kitchen, different combinations of double and single bunks, bedding provided, and toilets and shower(s) of course! Cheaper barges do not provide towels. They also offer free parking from where you collect the boat. If you're interested in this trip, please contact Mel and Andy, and please say what factors are most important to you i.e lowest price, better facilities on the boat, the 'prettier' stretches of canal, any canal but no rivers, or don't mind! Depending on responses it may obviously only be possible to offer the most popular choice(s) as the way forward... I'm looking to make a booking in the next few weeks for anyone that would like to do this, so please can you let me know if you're interested in the next fortnight. Numbers may be limited due to making up a full barge / barges. A deposit of approx £15 would be needed in the next 6 weeks, with the final balance needed around Feb next year. For further info see:- If Interested Contact Andy & Mel |

Pub Meet & Evening Walk Start and finish is The Lamb in Stoke Goldington, a Good Beer Guide regular and a fairly recent North Bucks CAMRA pub of the year. Since the car park is very small, please park considerately around the village and meet outside the pub for the 7:30 start. The route is adjustable depending on the weather and daylight, but is likely to be quite muddy in some places so a change of footwear is recommended. The fields that are likely to contain a herd of "enthusiastic" young cows have been edited out of my original route. If you can't make it in time for the walk, meet at The Lamb for a drink around 9pm. Maps of walk start:- Chris B leader |

Local Walk - Buddies to Buddies Social Walk The walk starts at 11am, from the end of Green Lane and finishes at Sixfields. Breakfast - Towcester Buddies Restaurant, tables booked for 9.30am Walk - starts at the Grafton Way bridleway outside Buddies in Towcester at 11am. It is approximately 15 mile. No lunch stop (as you'll be full of breakfast... ), but will be stopping at the Royal Oak at Blisworth (at about 3 - 3.30pm). Dinner - Sixfields Buddies Restaurant, Northampton, tables booked for 7pm. How do I get to Towcester? You can either car share or get the bus! Car sharing: My suggestion for car sharing is that all those interested meet outside Frankie and Bennys at 8.45 on Saturday, and you can work out which car to leave and which car to take to Towcester. The postcode for Buddies in Towcester is NN12 6TQ. Please note it is on the LEFT hand side of the A43 as you approach from Northampton. Green Lane is a residential road which leads to Buddies, I think it would easily take a few cars parked considerately- rather than leaving cars in the restaurant car park all day - its not very big. Bus: The number 8 bus will take you from Weston Flavell via Grey Friars Bus Station and Tesco Mereway to Towcester. I'm planning on catching the bus that leaves the bus station at 8.16, to get to Towcester at ~9am: http://www.stagecoachbus.com/PdfUploads/Timetable_15297_89.pdf; Cassie, Louise and I have expressed an interest in the bus so far. Breakfast: Booked for14 people: Belinda, Chris B, Mel, Nathan, Tim, Louise, Francisco, Chris G, Ray, Cassie, Sarah B, Millie, Dave, plus one extra. Walk - as above really, its approx 15 mile, its mostly shorts-friendly, but there are a few bits that aren't (zip offs?). We will be stopping at the Royal Oak in Blisworth. I think we'll get there about 3 -3.30pm. I've not fixed an official lunch stop, as I hope we'll all be still full from breakfast. When the walk was reccied we arrived at Sixfields at about 6-6.30, so we may have time for a drink somewhere first when we get there. Dinner - table is booked for 7pm for 15 people. For those car sharing, you may have a chance to retrieve your cars before we eat, but may have to do it afterwards. I hope that this is OK. |
Wednesday 20th |
Pub Meet & Evening Walk The walk will start at 7.30pm from the picturesque village of Wadenhoe. From here we'll take in the sights of the local church, Lyveden New Bield and some rather lovely countryside. The walk will be approximately 4 miles so will leave plenty of time for a relaxed pint at the King's Head Free House voted best riverside pub in Britain by The Sunday Times. Their speciality is traditional, cask brewed real ales so although I know none of us like that sort of thing I thought it worth a mention! The walk might be a little soggy in parts if the weather doesn't improve so please come prepared as a second, dry pair of shoes might be welcome for pubage. To get there please head to the pub..... Church Street, Wadenhoe, PE8 5ST (don't be alarmed by postcode, it's still pretty local, just slightly over the border). Drive past the pub on the left, past pub car park and you'll find the village hall car park, which seems to double as a public car park, at the end of the street on the left. If for any reason this car park is full I'm sure, as we'll be patronising it, the pub car park will be fine as it is quite big. Maps of walk start:- Leader Emma |

Local Walk Brampton Valley way and rolling hills of north Northants Walking through some pretty villages and countryside of north Northamptonshire. Heading north to Kelmarsh and later taking in the village of Haselbech before returning to the Brampton Valley Way with good views of the surrounding area. There are, shock horror, no pubs en route! However, there are plenty of options for refreshments after the walk, include the Stags Head in Maidwell, The Swan at Lamport or the Buddist Café in Kelmarsh (no beer in the last of these but I bet the cakes would be good.. !). Starting at 10.30am, distance ~10 miles. Starting point: Draughton Crossing car park on the Brampton Valley Way, couldnt find reference / postcode, but hopefully clear from the maps below (IGNORE the arrow!) Evening Walk This weeks walk is a slight twist on an evening walk - we're going on a treasure hunt! In 1795 a disgraced nobleman, Sir Clarence Curmudgeonly, hid a large sack of gold sovereigns in the tunnel workings during the abortive attempt to build the Blisworth tunnel. Rumour tells that he then moved it before the tunnel was abandoned in 1796. But where..............? For this walk walkers will be in teams in a race to walk around Stoke Bruerne following a Treasure Trail to find clues to find where he hid the treasure and hopefully notice signs, symbols and buildings you may never have looked at properly before! Clues are on the floor, walls, gateposts and generally all around you! All teams will be timed and there will be a prize for those that find the treasure in the quickest time! It should take about 1.5-2 hours. These trails are great fun and although there are currently only a few for the Northamptonshire area they are a national company and produce murder hunts, mystery trails, cycling and driving trails which are great fun for adults and families. We'll meet in the Navigation Inn car park at 7:30 where I will wait for your return before we announce the winners! If you don't fancy a walk and want to keep Cassie company you are more than welcome to just come for the social! More info at www.treasuretrails.co.uk Maps of walk start:- Cassie leader |

National Walk Lathkill Dale in the Peak District, 10.5 miles; 10.30am start A beautiful walk with lots of different types of scenery! Start of walk: outside the pub in Monyash Parking: there is a small car park on the side road by the pub (approaching on the B5055 from Bakewell this will be towards the end of the village on your right). If this is full, please park considerately around the village. The walk starts from Monyash, a village west of Bakewell. From the village well follow the Limestone way across pictureseque fields and a brief dip into Cales Dale. Fingers crossed for a dry day as well be eating our lunch on the hillside of Over Haddon with stunning views out to Youlgrave and beyond, before visiting the next door pub for a pint. (There were big signs about only eating their food on the premises so didnt bother to ask!). After lunch well head into Lathkill Dale itself, walking alongside the river. After a few miles the scenery becomes dominated by the limestone cliffs on either side of the valley. Eventually the valley gently opens out to fields near Monyash. Car sharing: Please meet at Sixfields at 8am for car sharing. (I know that the route finders may suggest 2h travelling time, but have allowed for traffic /boot-putting-on time!) Loos: There are toilets as the road dips down a hill at the beginning of Monyash (again from the Bakewell direction), with a layby opposite. There arent any near the pub where the walk starts. Evening Walk This evenings Pub Walk will start at the Althorp Inn (aka Fox & Hounds) in Great Brington. Meet in the pub car park that can be accessed from Back Lane alternatively you can park around the village and walk through to meet us. The walk is a little over four miles so we will need to leave promptly to get back before dark so you may wish to bring torches just in case. Please meet at 7.15 for a 7.30 start. We will head out of the village to the West across the fields adjacent to the Althorp estate where you can see Althorp House through the trees. We then continue on road for a short distance before picking up the bridleways across more fields before heading back towards the East to Little Brington church. We then cut through Little Brington returning to the pub where we should be back about 9.15 at the latest. I strongly recommend boots as the trail was a bit muddy when I checked, hopefully we will have some August sunshine to dry it out. Also I would recommend long trousers as walking through crop fields and long grass, unless having your legs tickled is your thing! Maps of walk start:- Debs leader |

Local Walk The walk starts from FINEDON, meet for a 10.30am start. The grid ref is SP914721, and we will start from the pocket park which is next to the Finedon cricket club ground. Its approx 4 miles in the morning and we will head out towards Gt. Harrowden where we have a choice of two pubs for our lunch stop. The pubs are The Lamb and the 10 O'clock. Elaine will try to find out about the possibilities of us eating sandwiches there and pub gardens, to make sure we are welcome. The afternoon section is a bit longer of approx 5 3/4 miles where we head out towards Isham and the Weetabix factory at Burton Latimer, where we come across a lovely weir and follow the river before heading back towards Finedon. We have a few bridges to cross and get that all important group picture on a bridge shot. There are some dodgy stiles and some fields with over grown stingers, so be aware that shorts may not be a good idea! Maps of walk start:- Elaine leader

Local Walk Walk starts from Holdenby village. Please meet at 10:30 by the telephone booth which is in the first side street of the main road heading towards East Haddon. Holdenby village is fairly small so please park considerately around the village and it would be great if lifts could be shared where possible. The landlord does not mind if we have our packed lunches in their garden and even offered to have them in the pub if the weather is bad, which hopefully will not be the case. The morning section is 4 miles followed by another 5 miles in the afternoon where we will be heading back to Holdenby via East Haddon. Maps of walk start:- Francisco leader |

Sunday 11th |
Local Walk Spratton, 6 miles with Sunday pub lunch (optional!) Our walk starts from outside the Kings Head Pub in Spratton (Grid Ref SP 718 702)at the usual 10:30am. Please be mindful that there may be parades and / or services in and around the Church due to Remembrance Sunday. Please park along the roads opposite and near the Pub not in the Pub car park (there seems plenty of space along the road past the church). Please note this is a 'Roast Beef walk' which means it's just more than half a day walking then off to the pub for Sunday lunch! We thought it would be nice to tuck into a roast dinner after a walk in the no doubt fresh November air! We will need to confirm our reservation for food at the pub so please let us know if youd like to join us. Youre very welcome to join us for just the walk, just the food, or both of course! We expect to be back at the pub for 1pm. Cost of food is about £7-50 with meat options of pork, gammon or beef, and vegetarian options are provided as well (veggie sausages, lasagne for example as per the pub!) Let us know if you have special dietary requirements and well enquire as to your options. Oh, now for the walk details... Firstly we leave the village of Spratton and head onto a brand new footpath to Teeton; this new path opening was announced in a fairly recent Ramblers Area newsletter, so we thought wed incorporate it into our walk and try it out! Don't know yet if there will be any Tea in Teeton! After tea-town we head up the hill out towards Hollowell before crossing a stream on the way to Creaton (Cream-tea-town). Round the back of Creaton and then tummy's should start rumbling! A quick wave to Highgate House then back to The Kings Head for a nice hot dinner**! (It seems the walk detail is somewhat shorter than the food detail! Oops). Maps of walk start:- **Walk leaders cannot accept responsibility for dinner being neither nice, nor hot! It will probably be dinner-like though. Mel has a cunning plan to recce the Sunday lunch (not the walk!) this weekend, so happy to send out reviews on request Mel and Ian leaders |

Lunch stop will be in Churchover on the green, where there is a bench and also a tyre swing on a rope!! There is also a pub but it is more of an Italian restaurant and may not be open. From there we will head towards Cotesbach - probably not seeing the hunt (complete with hounds and blokes in red jackets) as I did on the recce but we will see a duckpond! Just outside Cotesbach is the tea and cake stop which is at a large gift shop in a barn where you can pick up your quirky Christmas gifts.
