Meet at Salcey Forest car park (Grid Ref SP 795 514) at 10.30am.

Bring a compass if you have one, it will be muddy so wear suitable footwear.

Most of the navigation will be done on the orienteering course, so those that just want to do the course can do so.

If there's anyone who can help with the training it will be much appreciated.

We will be finished by 1 pm, there is a café if anyone wants a coffee after.

Sunday 23rd

Chiltern Hundreds

Meet at Wendover in the Chilterns at 10.30am, or at Sixfields, near Frankie and Bennies, at 9.15am to share cars.

Best route from Northampton (in my opinion) is down the M1 to junction 11, turn right towards Dunstable on the A505 and then carry on through Dunstable in roughly the same direction, go past the the turning to the Downs and follow signs straight on to Aston Clinton on the B489, then stay on this road past there until it meets the A4001 to Wendover.

Meeting point in Wendover is the car park in the town centre, off the High Street, also signposted to Toilets and Library (Grid Ref SP 868 077, or see Wendover website). Parking is free on Sundays but there is a height restriction of 2.1m (so no Land Rovers!). Parking may be restricted so car sharing is a good idea. (The only other car park is the station - also free on Sundays but it says non rail users will be clamped!!)

The walk is around 10 miles, via Coombe Hill and Chequers (Prime Minister's House), out towards Princes Risborough and back, with a lunch stop at The Plough in Cadsden - large beer garden. Terrain is quite heavily undulating, some might say hilly, with a total ascent of over 400m.

Start 10am from the reservoir car park on Naesby Rd, Welford. If you came on Sally's last walk last April it is the same starting point. Welford is on the A5199 4 miles north of the A14. Map Of Walk Start

Sunday 27th
(Easter Sunday)

Dan has prepared three possible walks -

Walk 1
Bleinheim Palace,
Woodstock, Oxfordshire

Figure of 8 (8 miles and 5 miles)
Grid ref: SP 443 167

Fantastic grounds and palace with optional gardens, walk through the parkland and along some nice river stuff. Lots of pub stops and a tourist info centre. Lots of park, statues etc and those who want to do the palace could opt out of some or all of the walking. Lots of parking, about 2 quid if you only do the park. Also ‘remains of a roman villa’ en route.

About 1.5 hrs driving although the M40 could be a disagreeable…

Walk 2
‘The Marlborough Downs (and ups)’
Avebury near Swindon

13.5miles, 458m of climbing

Grid ref: SSU 096 685

Slightly longer but more countryside. Trot over the downs to a pub by the river and back with a sort of hardcore undulation in the middle. Near Ridgeway and the White Horse Trail. Lots of National Trust stuff, seems very pretty.

Swindon is a bit further on than Oxford but well under 2 hrs driving time. Still have the M40 but hey…

Walk 3
Dodging Bullets in Cambridge & Granchester

10.5 miles

Flat as a pancake.

Grid ref: TL 435 355

Start in Granchester, walk up the river into Cambridge, through the town and past the colleges. Hang a left and walk to the American War Graves Cemetery. Walk back through a rifle range with ‘Danger Zone’ written all over the map and back to Granchester. Pub half way and a town in the middle. Lots of pretty river and colleges etc and no hills.

Should take about 1hr 20mins to get there.

They are all quite different walks. The Cambridge one is quite town based, the Marlborough one isn’t and Blenheim is sort of in between.

To vote for your choice of walk Click Here

Voting will close one month before the walk.

----------

After months of voting the following walk has been democratically selected -

‘The Marlborough Downs (and ups)’

Near Swindon, Wiltshire.

19.8km (12.3 miles), 338m climbing, est time 4.5 hrs.

Goes from country park through two Ogburne villages, past
White Horse hill figure and back. Pub stop in one of the villages.

Near Ridgeway and the White Horse Trail. Lots of National Trust stuff, seems very pretty.

Meet at 10.30am BST in the car park at
Barbury Castle Country Park, (grid ref: SU 156 760)
or at Sixfields (near Frankie and Bennies) at 8.30am BST to share lifts.

The Brailes Three Hills Walk 2005

This is a unique opportunity to climb Brailes Hill - the second highest hill in Warwickshire and not accessible via a public path. Glorious views of the Malverns, Edge Hill, the Cotswolds and the Forest of Arden. Circular walk of approx. six and a half miles, obviously very undulating.

Starting from Brailes Village Hall, Brailes, South Warwickshire. Brailes consists of Upper Brailes and Lower Brailes but it is effectively one village. The Village Hall is in Lower Brailes next to the Sports Field and next to the School. It is very easy to find as there is just the one road going through the village/s.

The best route to Brailes from Northants is via Banbury (about 40 miles) although you can go cross country via Edge Hill and Tysoe.

Starting time is from 9-11.30am. But we will be starting at 10.30. There will be a lot of other people there so e-mail Andy in advance to co-ordinate meeting up.

Refreshments available and free parking. Charge of £2.50 (£1 for under 16s) - proceeds to local charities.

Bank Holiday Weekend Away

Where: Bunkhouse in Pantygelli, near Abbergavenny, Monmouthshire. It is ideally located for exploring the Black Mountains. The bunkhouse has a 3 star grading from the Welsh Tourist Board and can be viewed at the link below. It will sleep a total of 24 in two dormitories.

Exact itinerary to be decided but we do have the opportunity to book a session on the high-level ropes course at a local outdoor education centre if anyone is interested. This would normally cost £15 per person but we should be able to get a slightly better price. There doesn't seem to be a minimum number required for a group so we could run it even if only a few people are interested.

The bunkhouse has now been booked and Erica needs a deposit of £10 per person. Total cost for accommodation would be £25 each, based on 20 people (remember it is for 3 nights).

Saturday 4th

Annual BBQ and Awards Ceremony.

Now also includes our first AGM

To be held at Robin's house, central Northampton.

I am proud to be hosting this illustrious event at chez Dearden… hopefully my humble abode will have room for you all.

Basically it's a BBQ at mine. Hopefully the weather will be kind!

I'll provide the BBQ, and flammables but I'd be grateful if you can all bring a bit of food and drink so that all tastes can be catered for. I'll sort out some salads, nibbles and sauces though.

It would also be useful if anyone has any folding camping chairs/ deckchairs they could bring - I have some garden furniture but it may not be enough.

People are welcome to crash over, but it will be floor space, if too many want to stay then people may end up in the shed!!

Contact Robin in advance to say if you are coming to the BBQ and if you want to stay over, to give an idea of numbers.

Crib Goch

For "hardcore" walkers only!

Organised by Vicki

Sunday 17th

Local Walk

Start at Brackley, meet at 10.30am at the Market Place by the Town Hall - there is plenty of free parking.

Walk goes via the villages of Evenley, Mixbury, Westbury and Turweston and back to Brackley.

There are 2 pubs on the walk (we don't go into Evenley and Mixbury doesn't have one). The first pub is in Westbury 'The Reindeer' where we are planning to stop for lunch it does do food - we sampled it in the name of research - and also has a beer garden. I imagine we will probably get there by 12.30ish.

The second is in Turweston where we can stop for a drink on the way back as it's only about a mile from the end - it has a massive beer garden suitable for James L's various throwing implements.

There are lots of nettles to be tackled so people better beware, but unless you are a big girls blouse it should be fine.

This is a 3 counties walk as it starts in Northamptonshire and then moves into Oxfordshire and then Buckinghamshire then back to Northamptonshire. We found that Northamptonshire has much better footpaths than the other two counties by the way.

A prize will be given to the silliest hat wearer !!

Approx 8.5 miles. Should be finished by 3.30 - 4.00

This is a circular walk and not a figure of eight, but starting or finishing at the mid point is possible (by prior arrangement only).

Robin's Camping Trip, Brotherswater, The Lake District

For this weekend I am following on from Andy's reportedly damp weekend introduction to camping in the lakes last year… hopefully July will bring warm and sunny weather but hey this is the UK… Morocco is a bit far for a weekend!

I plan to camp at Brotherswater, and old uni haunt for me. It's a well equipped site with showers and all the full facilities. There is a pub/restaurant and small shop on the site, and the Brotherswater Inn close by too. The campsite even has a website

In walking terms I'd like to lead a walk up Striding Edge onto Helvelyn, this could be extended to a big day out and take in Dollywagon Pike and Fairfield. Also being the Lakes there is plenty of scope for shorter, lower level walks, boating on Ullswater, or shopping and cakes in Ambleside.

National Walk

North Downs Way, Kent

Meet at Sixfields at 8.15 with view to start walking by 10.30.

The journey is about 110 miles from Northampton. I would recommend going on the M1, M25, go via Dartford bridge, and come off at J3, take care to come off on A20, not M20. At Farringham take A225 through Eynsford to Otford and turn left along the old Pilgrims Way to Kemsing.

Journey time estimated to be around 2 hours on a good run.

We will start at Kemsing Church (grid ref 567589 on the Explorer Outdoor Leisure map no 147). Free car park near Church.

Route: Plan to walk along North Downs Way, and from Summeryard farm, walk to the Knatts Valley and onto the pub at Romney Street. Good local ale and you can get a pub meal for around £8. From here we walk across to Shoreham and then back via Otford to Kemsing.

Walk in region of 9 miles.

Easiest way to get there is by train - Best train service is from Bedford or Luton (Northampton only runs buses till midday).

Get the 8.50am train from Bedford so be at the station by 8.35am.

Slight change of plan, we are now travelling to Kew rather than Mortlake which means we can get tickets for £7 if we are in groups of 4.

Don't buy your ticket straight away but wait until there are 4 of us.

This means we change train at West Hampstead leaving there at 9.53am getting in to Kew at 10.16am (if we miss that one it's 1/2 hour to the next one)

If you will be in or near London meet at Kew Station (get the District Line) or the car park in Richmond Park (GR TQ204 744) which is 1km into the walk

From the Village Hall we will head over to Whistley Woods. We will then walk past the medieval village of Radstone and round to Falcutt.

We pass Astwell Castle as we return via Crowfield along the Falcutt Road before heading back to Syresham for lunch at the King's Head pub.

This is approx 9k (5.6 miles) and should take about three hours.

After lunch we will take another loop from the village, this time venturing into Buckinghamshire.

The afternoon loop will take in Biddlesden Park and will be shorter than morning loop, but maybe only just! The length of this loop can be varied to suit what people fancy after lunch.

National Walk

Lathkill Dale, Peak District

Meet 08:30 at Sixfields (outside Frankie and Bennies) for car sharing.

Or meet at 10:30 at the walk start in Alport, near Youlgreave in the Peak District, parking on the road near the phone box in the village, near where the road crosses the River Lathkill (grid ref SK 220 645)

11.35 miles, a reasonably gentle walk through beautiful White peak scenery.

We start by heading up Lathkill dale, following the river, through a mix of open fields, woodland and then steep sided limestone valleys.

At the top of Lathkill dale is picturesque Monyash, with village green and a pub - the Bulls Head, which serves food but can get busy.

After a break in Monyash we'll head back to the start along the higher ground, through fields and farms, before dropping down into another valley to follow the River Bradford back to the start.

Local Walk

Circular walk from Ashby St Ledgers. Approx 9½ miles.

Parking in village near The Olde Coach House Inn (or if you are cheeky - in their car park but I didn't recommend this!). Meet at 10.30.

We will walk along the Jurassic Way to Braunston then follow the Grand Union Canal Walk. We later cross the canal twice to follow the towpath of the Leicester arm of the canal. Near Watford (the Northamptonshire one!) we cross the canal again to re-join the Jurassic Way (crossing busy A5) back to Ashby St Ledgers.

As well as ASL (as I shall call it) there are pubs in Braunston, near Braunston locks or we could detour into Welton or Long Buckby Wharf.

Monday 26th
(Boxing Day)

Local Boxing Day Walk (a.k.a. Will's Wild & Woolley Walk)

Meeting Point : Hunsbury Hill Country Park car park. 9.45 for 10am departure.

We will walk through bottom part of the park to the Grand Union canal. Then it's along the towpath to Gayton Marina. Just a short walk from here is the course for the Wild & Woolley motorcycle scramble. This event commences at 11am and will last for about an hour. A bucket collection for charity is taken but there is no set admission fee. Word to the wise - do not stand too close to the course unless you want a mud bath!

After the W&W we retrace our steps continuing our merry way along the towpath to Blisworth. Here we can stop at The Royal Oak pub (if you so desire) or press ahead passing the Primary School, Blisworth Football Club, over the railway and across the fields to Barn Lane. From here we continueto Milton Malsor where another potential pub stop is The Greyhound.

From Milton Malsor we walk alongside the Towcester Road, through West Hunsbury linking up to the footpath which will take us back through the top part of Hunsbury Hill Country Park and back to the car park!

Estimated distance is 8 miles.

(Ideally I would like to round the day by watching Sale v Saints on Sky TV - K.O. 3pm so if anyone can help!)
