March

Wednesday March 3rd - 8pm Kislingbury Red Lion Pub

Saturday March 13th - Support Bill in his acting career at The Abbey Centre in East Hunsbury. Evening performance. Contact Kate for more details.

Sunday March 14th - Andy. 9 miles. Either meet to share lifts at 9.30am at Sixfields near Frankie and Bennies or at Maulden Wood, at lay-by off the A6 northbound at 10.30 (Grid Ref TL 072 394). Directions - from Northampton area head south on the M1, leave at junction 13 and take the A507 towards Ampthill. Continue on the A507 past Ampthill, until you meet the A6 at a roundabout (near Clophill). Turn left here, onto the A6 towards Bedford, and you will shortly see a sign saying “Forest lay-by ¼ mile hot / cold food / snacks”. This is the lay-by you want, which is very long so should have plenty of space (aim to park near the centre, which is the entrance to the wood). If the dual carriageway ends you have missed it – you can only enter the lay-by whilst heading north so you will have to turn round, go back to the roundabout and try again!

Sunday March 28th - Bugbrooke Community Centre meeting at 10.30am. The walk is 9 miles, with an option of two pubs on route!

Directions: Follow the road from Kislingbury to Bugbrooke. Go through Bugbrooke keeping left and carry on down the High Street, which then turns into Camp Hill. Then turn left into Camp Close. James leader.

Wednesday 2nd

8pm Kislingbury Red Lion Pub

Sunday 13th

Starting from Longnor in Derbyshire. Meet 8.30 at Sixfields carpark (near Frankie and Bennies) as usual to share lifts.

The walk will take about 5 hours. There are some steep bits in it so it's classed as Moderate.

There is a pub about 2/3rds of the way round but no food there so bring a pack up.

Dave C leader

Sunday 27th

Woburn. 10.30am start at GR950331 a free car park, with 200 spaces (how many are you expecting John?). 6 miles in morning. 5.8 miles in afternoon. Meet at The Bull Inn, on the main street in Woburn at 1.30pm (where we're having lunch stop).

Billed as the second best walk of the year, this is a safari walk with a guarantee that you will see herds of deer, elephant, rhinos, lions, bison, wallabies and much much more. Don't forget your binoculars!

The pub stop is at the Bull Inn, not the Bull Hotel over the road, it serves proper beer, it does bar snacks and it has a largish garden so we can eat sandwiches outside.

Most of the morning walk is shorts friendly (no stingers) with a short rough section where trousers will be needed.

Directions: Follow the signs for Woburn Abbey/Safari Park from M1 junction 13, along the A 507, then A 4012 into Woburn village. Turn left at T junction, head 300m to crossroads, turn left, head for car park.

You're all thinking why is Woburn only the second best walk of the year - well the best is on the 8th August (according to John, leader of both).

Dan leader

Pitsford Water

More "mild undulation" in a walk not a million miles away from Dan's of a few weeks ago (more like 1 mile away!). In fact it should be fairly gentle as we take a wander round the small lake that is Pitsford Water, and a stroll through Brixworth Country Park in the afternoon.

Almost a figure of 8, as the start point is only separated from the mid point by a causeway and a distance of 1 mile. Approx 6 miles in the morning and another 6 in the afternoon.

Meet at 10.30am at the car park / picnic area across the causeway from Holcot (GR SP 780 701) or at 1.00pm at the White Swan in Holcot (GR SP 794 699).

Weekend away - Venue change to Bridges, The Long Mynd, Shropshire hills (Grid ref. SO 394 964).

Staying in a small youth hostel that costs about £9.50 per night, in a small hamlet with not much more than a pub and looking straight out on the hills (note hills, not mountains - will suit all members of the group).

We can walk straight from the hostel and it is only about 2 hours away so we can get two full days walking in and a few drinks on Friday without having to leave at 3pm.

Contact John if interested

Sunday 31st

A 9-mile walk around Ashridge Park, a National Trust estate. Tea shop halfway round and pub at the end.

We will travel to the start of this walk by train, leaving Northampton station at 9.50am, stopping along the way at MK and Bletchley, getting to Tring (Grid Ref 951122) at 10.30 where we start the walk.

We will be finishing at Berkhamsted where we will get the train back to Northampton. Those who want to meet us at Tring can get the train back there also. Buy a day return to Berkhamsted (about £12) when you get to the station and wait for the group outside the station at Northampton - get there 15 mins before the train leaves, it will not wait for you! If you get on further down the line we will meet you at the front of the train.

This is all dependent on there being no engineering works - if there are there will be a change of venue, which will be published here.

North York Moors

Based at Rent-A-Hostel in Scarborough, offering easy access to the moors and the possibilities of coastal walks, steam trains, trips to "Heartbeat Country" (if you must) swimming in the sea (if you're daft enough) and more.

The plan for Saturday is to walk from Robin Hoods Bay along the coast path to Whitby (Count Dracula and fish and chips) then inland back to Robin Hoods Bay - about 10 miles.

On Sunday the walk will be somewhere in the west of the North York Moors, to a length that suits the group.

The hostel is about a mile from the centre of Scarborough, we have got the 28 beds in the main house (see link below for full details).

There has been a good response to the weekend and places are going fast, if you want to go get your deposit of £15 to John ASAP.

Wednesday 1st

8pm Kislingbury Red Lion Pub

Map of Pub / Village Location

Sunday 12th

Starting place is the Draughton Car Park on the Brampton Valley Way (Grid Ref SP 755773).

Road Directions: Take A508 (from Northampton) towards Market Harborough. When you reach Maidwell turn right before you pass the pub on your left-hand side. Follow the road through the village. You should see "Draughton Crossing Car Park" signposted on the left. If you reach Draughton village you've gone too far! (If you went on Dan's walk in July you may remember this car park)

Walk is about 8½ miles long. Best pub stop is likely to be The George at Great Oxenden where they are slightly posh so definitely boots off. A slight detour is required for this. (We do also pass The Bull at Arthingworth but this is too early on walk for a stop). We walk through both tunnels on the Brampton Valley Way so this is not a walk for the squeamish.

Bill leader

Sunday 19th

5 mile walk from Bucknall Woods, finishing at The White Horse in Silverstone for a Christmas drink (or maybe back to Kate and Simon's in Towcester for mince pies and mulled wine!)

Meet at 10.30 at Bucknall Woods car park, Grid Ref SP 657 449.
