Local figure of 8 Walk

A figure of 8 walk starting at 10:30am from Great Cransley, outside The Three Cranes pub (Grid Ref SP 830 768). Please park considerately around the village (there is usually good space on Church Lane for parking).

The morning will take us through Cransley Wood and over fields to Loddington and back, and will be approx 4.5 miles.

Lunch will be back at the village at about 12:15pm where we can also partake in a bevvy from The Three Cranes (please bring a packed lunch, to be confirmed whether or not we can eat it on pub grounds though).

The afternoon stretch will begin at 12:45 and take us out past Cransley Reservoir to Thorpe Malsor, before skirting around the A43 for some scenic views of that(!) and then back to Great Cransley. This stretch is 5.5 miles, and there is a lovely tea shop at Glebe Farm Shop on the way where we can hopefully enjoy a cheeky cuppa / cake if people would like to.

Please join us for either half or the full walk.

Friday 21st to Sunday 23rd February 2014
Snowdonia

The location I’ve chosen is just outside the Snowdonia National Park in North Wales, and the accommodation is an activity and mountain centre that can hold 30 people.

The cost for the weekend will be approx. £35 for accommodation and food (excluding any eating out), even if we only half fill the places…the cost will be less if more people go.

Plan for walking is in the Aran mountains in South Snowdonia (about 45 min drive from the centre) on Saturday,, and to walk around Llangollen and the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct on the Sunday (completed in 1805, it’s the longest and highest aqueduct in Britain and a World Heritage Site, for all you fact fans!)

The walking will be suitable for all although there may be an easier and harder group for the mountain day, depending on preferences and experience.

We will walk south east out of the village and then north to Shortwood House, then head east to the old village of Faxton, continue along the bridleway pass the Old Lodge and cross Mill Lane. We then turn north on the footpath until we reach the road that runs past Mawsley Village, turning southwest through Old Poor's Gorse to Old, before heading back via Scaldwell village.

On the recce it was very muddy in places so please can you be prepared to get dirty!

Lunch will probably be at Old, where there is a pub; please bring a packed lunch...if the pub aren’t happy for us to eat our lunch in the garden then we could head to the park there.

Sunday 9th March

National Walk

A 9 mile walk starting at 10:30am from the public car park next to the Stanton village club in the Cotswolds. The nearest postcode for sat nav is WR12 7NG, and the grid ref is SP 067343.

The village is 3 miles south of Broadway off the B4632. The car park is on the right hand side of the road next to the village cricket ground. It takes about 1hour 30 mins to get there from Northampton.

Alternatively meet at our usual car sharing location at Upton Country Park car park close to Sixfields, Northampton at 8:45 am for car sharing.

The walk will take us through 3 very pretty villages, firstly following the Cotswolds Way to Stanway which is a small hamlet, the most striking feature being the magnificent gatehouse to Stanway House. Then after climbing through Lidcombe Wood we will reach Snowshill sitting on top of the hill. It has a Tudor manor house (not open when we go). We will be visiting the Snowshill Arms pub for a drink, but we will have to eat our packed lunch on the green outside.

In the afternoon we will return to Stanton with some stunning views across towards the Malverns.

Sunday 16th

Local Walk

The walk will start at 10:30am from the car park outside the NatWest bank at Cranfield University (Grid Ref.SP 941427, postcode MK43 0SR should get you pretty close). If you're coming from the M1 junction 14 direction it'll be on the right, just past the main University entrance. Note that we are NOT meeting at Cranfield village, and our meeting point at the University is a mile or so to the North-West of Cranfield village. The car park outside the Bank is free, and there is plenty of on-road parking nearby.

From the University, we will be walking around the end of the runway (there is an airfield next to the University), maybe seeing the odd light aircraft, to get to Cranfield village. After walking through some of the village, we'll then head past the church and strike out towards firstly the hamlet of Hulcote, and then Salford village, where we will have lunch at one of the two pubs there (bring sandwiches, we should be able to eat them in the pub grounds). Distance around 5.5 miles.

In the afternoon we'll pick up the Milton Keynes boundary walk for much of the way, arriving back at the University after around 4.5 miles. For anyone who wishes to stay around afterwards there are opportunities for bevvies of both the alcoholic and non-alcoholic variety (at student prices!), plus the opportunity to widen ones knowledge at the library! ;-)

Please park considerately and meet at the junction of High Street and Suttons Walk, by the red phone box, for a 10:30am start.

We will walk South-East through Caldecote and then Hulcote and the edge of the Easton Neston estate on to Shutlanger.

I am planning for us to stop at the Plough Inn at Shutlanger (I haven't confirmed whether we can eat our own lunches, but if not we will stop nearby for that). We will then head North-East before completing the journey back to Astcote via the village of Tiffield.

Wednesday 16th

Pub meet & Evening walk

Welcome to the first evening walk of the summer! It will be a fairly short walk, as this early in the year there is limited daylight left in the evenings, so will be around 3 miles and should take just over an hour.

Please assemble in Nether Heyford, by the red telephone box on the west end of the village green (after parking considerately around the village). Grid ref SP659584. We’ll be walking across farmland along the Nene Way towards Flore. Our return will be via a mixture of the Grand Union canal path and road, so although the light will be quite dim by then, at least the terrain will be reasonable underfoot. Please bring head torches if you’d feel more comfortable with them, but I didn’t find one necessary on the recce.

Once back in the village of Nether Heyford we’ll go for a drink at The Olde Sun, Middle Street.

If you want to meet but not walk, please join us at the pub for a drink from around 8:45.

Walkers - please try to be booted-up and ready to walk for 7:30, to maximise the daylight available to us!

Pub Meet & Evening Walk

Abington Park walk - 2 miles with optional tennis beforehand!

Meet at 7:30pm at the park gates on the corner of Wellingborough Rd and Ardington Rd, opposite the Abington Park Hotel, for a very easy and child / buggy-friendly stroll around the park.

If you fancy exerting yourself a bit more, then let me (Mel) know if you'd like a game of (doubles hopefully!) tennis at the park beforehand, and I'll book it for 6:30 / enquire further re: equipment hire etc for anyone interested. If you don't have my contact details then pls contact me on info@letsgetreadytoramble.org.uk.

We'll then pop over the road to the APH afterwards, or might head further down Welly Rd depending on what people fancy...so pls let me know if you're just coming for the pub so I can re-direct you if necessary!

**Update**

Please note that a cycling race is taking place in Northampton on this day, which could affect your travel to the walk / tennis. The council website says:-

'From 4.30am to 7pm on Wednesday 7th May, a large part of the town centre will be closed to traffic, including the Derngate, St Giles Street, Castilian Street, Spring Gardens, Hazelwood Road, Albion Place, Bedford Place and part of Guildhall Road.'

The Waendel Walk is an annual walking festival around Wellingborough, with walks of up to 26 miles on the Saturday and Sunday.

The full list of walks can be seen Here

Usually members of our group will do the 26 miles walk on Saturday and / or Sunday (which they call "42km Marathon Field and Track") Some people will do other shorter walks as well.

If you would like to join us just Contact Mel by the end of April stating what walk and what day you would like to do, and on what day.

She will then co-ordinate this to bring people together who want to do the same walk.

'Superhero' evening walk

Meet outside the Brittiania pub, Northampton (NN4 7AA), where there is lots of parking available along the roads nearby, for a 7.30pm start.

An evening walk with a difference, all walkers are cordially invited to turn up in superhero outfits for an extra bit of fun! Whether it is 'super woman', 'spider man', 'banana man' or 'carrier-bag man' (if you haven't heard of that last one, please turn up to find out more!), all will be welcome. There might even be an appearance of 'Costume woman', to help those who (devastatingly) forget to bring their outfits / special powers on the night!

Route: Heading out to Great Houghton, through a bit of Brackmills, but mostly across the fields, continuing to Little Houghton and around the nearby flood reservoir bringing us back to the Brittiania pub for around 9pm. Its about a 4 mile walk.

Exmoor and Somerest Coast - Staying in Minehead

The plan is to stay in cottages just outside Minehead, which gives easy access to Exmoor and the Somerset coast for walking. It'll take about 3 hours to drive there from Northampton.

Approximate cost for the weekend for accommodation is £65pp, plus a share of communal food.

The price depends on how many of the 4 cottages on site that we take, they can hold up to 18 people depending on configuration.

It will probably be possible to book alternative B&B accommodation in Minehead itself if you miss out on the cottage places.

As some of you know, I was originally hoping to book a weekend in the Mendips, but was unable to find suitable accommodation. Despite this, hopefully Monday will be a walk in the Cheddar area, which is on the way back.

Annual BBQ & AGM

We’re proposing to hold our upcoming Annual General Meeting and BBQ at Grendon Lakes, near Grendon, Northampton.

This is where we celebrate the achievements of the past year over a few burgers, by handing out awards for Best Walk, Best Weekend and Best Social and possibly some other "amusing" awards!

The plan is to arrive in the afternoon on Sat 7th June, and if it’s a nice sunny day possibly partake in some of the water sports they have on offer or just generally chill / play Frisbee in the sunshine!

Then we’ll BBQ from approx 6pm, followed by our AGM.

It’s a campsite so you’re encouraged to stay over too, ready to join the post-AGM walk the next morning!

Please can you Let Mel Know if you’re planning to join us, and whether you’d like to camp (if so please can you say whether you have a tent with or without space for others, or need tent space if available from somebody else).

Mel will then get back to those coming or interested with further details / arrangements / prices.

Please see link below for further details

Wednesday 18th

Pub Meet & Evening Walk

Northampton Riverside Evening Walk from Malt Shovel followed by Live Band (free) + best real ales in Northampton (NOT free)

Meet for a 7.30PM start at the Malt Shovel Tavern on Bridge St in Northampton.

Address: 121 Bridge Street, Northampton, NN1 1QF

The walk takes us along the Nene Way, following the river, past the new flats and into Becketts Park, where we may see some squirrels. We continue into Midsummer Meadow, taking the riverside walk.

After crossing Barnes Meadow we reach a section of flood channel and then return along the main river channel and past the whitewater / canoeing course, before returning via a slightly different route through Barnes Meadow, Midsummer Meadow and the park and then back along the riverside.

The walk in total is approx 4 miles, we should be back at the pub at around 9.

As this is a town pub they will not appreciate muddy boots, but this shouldn't be an issue as barring extreme weather before the walk it will be do-able in trainers with no mud to see as it is mostly on hard paths and just a bit of grass.

On returning to the pub we will see a live gig by "Cherry Lee Mewis". It seems to be a very good band (and free) so the pub will be fairly crowded. However that shouldn't stop us sampling the impressive array of real ales!

There is no parking at the Malt Shovel pub itself - you can park for free fairly near at St Peters Way (near Argos) or you can probably get away with parking next to the pub in Morrisons (free parking for max. 3 hours for Morrisons customers - they now have cameras in the car park so you will most certainly get a parking fine if you exceed the 3-hr limit). Alternatively there is the St John's multi storey which is £1 for all evening. Please do check carefully about the parking rules on display on the evening of your parking (sorry we accept no liability if you get clamped or parking fine).

July

Wednesday 2nd

Evening Walk & Pub Meet

We will start this approximately 5-mile walk at Irchester, (just outside Wellingborough), meeting near the Carpenters Arms on the High Street at 7:30pm. Please park considerately around the village.

The route will go from Irchester and roughly follow the Midland Mainline to Wymington. Once at Wymington, if Network Rail have managed to speed up their bridge replacement programme and reopened the two bridges they're raising to allow for electrification of the line, we'll go that way, else it's around a kilometre along the road, before heading first to the hamlet of Farndish, and then back across the fields to Irchester.

Although it wasn't very muddy when I recce'd it, I would suggest something more than light trainers as we will be using some 'proper' footpaths.

Once back at around 9:30 (there'll be plenty of daylight left!), we'll have a drink at the Carpenters Arms. Though as it is apparently changing landlord in mid-June, there is a vague chance it'll be closed - which case we'll just have to go to another nearby pub!

This shorter half day 4.5 mile walk is based around Moulton which is still clinging on to being a village to the North/East of Northampton.

Meet at the Village Hall Car Park, off Pound Lane, opposite the Telegraph Pub at 10:30am.

The walk starts from the Car park and snicks through to the one way system. We then head off out of the village and towards Overstone Grange before bearing right and across the A43 towards Cowpasture Spinney.

Once in Overstone we make our way back towards Moulton over the A43 again and via Crowlands Common Nature reserve. After we've heard the birdies we look after our tummies with a well-earned Toby Carvery for those die-hard Sunday Lunchers (this will be at approx. 1pm).

Or if you want to head home for tea & cake leave us at the Nature Reserve, and wander back through Moulton hopefully finding your car near the Telegraph.

Alternatively meet in Long Compton, Warwickshire ready for a 10:30 start (I suggest parking in the Village Hall car park, on the left shortly after the Red Lion pub - we'll meet by the waymarked footpath at the south end of the Village Hall, grid ref SP288324).

First we'll walk across farmland (arable - no cows!), and through the picturesque hamlet of Little Rollright, then onwards to the Rollright Stones. This landmark comprises a ceremonial stone circle, plus a number of monoliths dating from between 3,000- 2,000BC. Apparently it is impossible to count the stones twice and get the same number! This location will also be an early lunch break as we stop to admire the views (please bring a packed lunch!).

Then we'll head across the valley to the village of Whichford and enjoy a drink in the friendly pub there. The Norman Knight offers a good selection of ales and even has its own micro-brewery on site.

Finally the last section of our walk will take us up into woodlands, and then back into the village of Long Compton.

Buddies Breakfast Walk **Linear Walk**

As the description of this walk suggests, this is an ambitious plan of our organising abilities (or Belinda's?!?). The idea is to meet in Greens Norton - the end of the walk, drive to the start of the walk in Daventry, eat breakfast in the American diner chain of restaurants called Buddies, walk back to Greens Norton, then reunite the drivers of the the Daventry cars with their vehicles.

Meeting point: near The Butchers Arms, High Street, Greens Norton ( postcode for pub is NN12 8BA)

Meet at Greens Norton at 9.15 for 9.30am prompt departure

Map of Meeting Place

Breakfast time: approx 10am at Buddies, High St, Daventry, N11 4HT

Map of Buddies Daventry

Walk start time: 11am from outside Buddies, High St, Daventry

For those joining us at Daventry, please note you will need to make your own arrangements to return to your car (if applicable) at the end of the walk. Belinda will only be able organise the linear part of the walk for those meeting at Green's Norton and eating before walking!(There may be a few spaces, but this can't be guaranteed.. ).

The walk: approx 12 miles of undulating countryside across a beautiful party of the county

Walk description:

Starting from the centre of Daventry we will head out of town towards the pretty village of Newnham. Following well marked footpaths to Farthingstone, where we will join the Knightley Way for the rest of our journey south. A mixture of field walking and some roads, up hills and down valleys, past pubs (and stopping at the one at Litchborough).

Please Note: There is a Moto GP event on at Silverstone this weekend, so traffic may be busier than usual around Greens Norton - so leave a bit earlier!

Pub Meet

The Dukes Arms, Woodford, NN14 4HE.

Meet from 8pm for drinks as usual or from 7pm if you'd like food as explained below...

This is a pub meet with a slight difference - The Dukes Arms in Woodford serves a dish called the 'dogs dinner' so we thought we'd try it out...the dish is pretty much a giant yorkshire pud with meat / sausages and veg inside it (there may only be one type of meat offered, although sausages can be the alternative), and costs about £8. We'll need to book a table for this so please e-mail info@letsgetreadytoramble.org.uk if you'd like to be added to the list.

If you don't fancy the food then please still come along for the pub meet from 8ish.

National Walk - Tilton-on-the-Hill

With optional Sunday lunch...a national walk to 'stretch our legs' a little, but still very close to Northants!

A 7.5 mile circular walk from Tilton-on-the-Hill, which as a fun fact is the highest village in Leicestershire at 215m! According to the local paper "there is a climb into Tilton that some may find challenging" but in reality I don't think anyone will. There are views of the John O'Gaunt viaduct which spans 230m with 14 arches!

Please meet at 10:30am outside the Rose & Crown pub, after parking considerately around the village. Tilton is about 50 mins from Northampton, taking the A508 straight through from Kingsthorpe, via Market Harborough & out the other side.

Following the walk, we plan to head to the Golden Fleece at South Croxton, 10 minutes drive from the start / end of the walk, for a Sunday lunch carvery (costs approx £10) at approx 1:30-1:45. This will need to be booked in advance so please write in to info@letsgetreadytoramble to reserve your place, or talk to Rachel. The sooner you can do this the better your chance of securing a place as they may be limited...This Sunday lunch has been tried and tested and is very yummy!

Arrival at Stony Stratford is expected for approx 3pm where there will be some tea served in the Sports Club adjacent to the start car park. National Walk - Cannock Chase

A 10 mile walk at Cannock Chase (smallest Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in Britain) starting at 10:30am from the Visitor Centre on Marquis Drive where there is a cafe and toilets. The post code for sat nav is WS12 4PW and the grid reference is SK004153.

The easiest way to get there is to meet at our usual car sharing location at Upton Country Park car park close to Sixfields, Northampton at 9:15 am. Alternatively if you are meeting us at the walk start the quickest way is to go via M1, M6, M6 Toll getting off at T6 and going via Hednesford.

The walk will take us through the heathland of Cannock Chase, along the Sherbrook valley to the stepping stones. We will stop at the Barley Mow pub at Milton for a drink and eat our packed lunch.

Pub Meet

Seeing as it's bonfire night for November's pub meet, it would be a shame not to enjoy some fireworks with our drinks! And where better to head than the very place that the gunpowder plot was hatched...Ashby St. Ledgers, Northants, near Rugby.

Meet at The Olde Coach House, Main Street, Ashby St. Ledgers, CV23 8UN from 7:30, with fireworks starting at 8pm.

The pub is serving food too.

Local (ish) Walk

A 9 mile walk from the outskirts of Rugby including a walk past the historic and soon to be demolished Rugby Radio Station and also a visit to (probably) the newest pub in Northamptonshire, The Head of Steam in Lilbourne, which was converted from a house!

The walk also takes in a stretch of canal, a Motte and Bailey castle (involing a short hill climb) and most exciting of all, the propsect of seeing the only known Ospreys in England!

The pub does not normally do food but will provide sandwiches for us - these have now been ordered for those who have said they would like some, this may spread a bit further I am told, but to be sure of eating everyone else will need to bring sandwiches etc which you can eat on the green before joining us in the pub.

Meet for a 10.30 start at the canalside car park near the Mr Kipling Roundabout in Rugby, which is three roundabouts down from the M6 junction 1 and easily identifiable by the large floral Cherry Bakewells! From the roundabout turn left if heading down from the M6, and then first right for the car park. Grid Ref is SP 509 770, nearest postcode for your Sat Nav is for the Premier Inn on the other side of the roundabout, which is CV21 1HL. There is a shorter route from Northampton coming off the M1 at Junction 18 and using the A5 which your satnav may suggest, this will still bring you out above the Mr Kipling Roundabout.
