The Wig And Pen

Sunday 10th

A figure of 8 walk starting from the free car park on Park Street in Woburn village (SP950331). A figure of 8 walk is a walk in two halves, returning to the starting point at lunchtime and going on an afternoon walk from approximately the same location. This allows people to either walk the morning loop, the afternoon loop or all day.

Meet at 10:30am in the car park for the morning/full day, or in the market square (by Town Antiques/Loch Fyne) in the centre of Woburn village at 1pm for the afternoon walk only.

The morning walk is 5 miles long, walking through the historic Woburn deer park where 10 species of deer roam free. We pass close by Woburn Abbey, walk through woodlands and a bamboo forest before returning to Woburn via the deer park. There are toilets facilities available en-route, and a pointless stile to keep Andy amused.

We will have a picnic lunch in Woburn village before finding a pub to sample some fine ales.

The afternoon walk is 6 miles long (see above for starting point), walking through woods round Woburn, but keep your eyes peeled for the exotic wildlife, hopefully we will see elephants, giraffes, zebras, bears, and wallabies - as we walk past Woburn Safari Park. Bring your binoculars!

Sunday 17th

Due to limited parking at Holdenby, please meet at 10am Upton Country Park to share lifts up to the starting point, where we will start walking around 10.30am. The walk is likely to be muddy, so please bring a change of footwear with you (to wear in someone else's car / drive home).

From Holdenby the walk heads towards Harlestone picking up the Midshires Way to Nobottle. From there we cut through to Little Brington for a Pub stop at the Saracen's Head. Next we head to Great Brington before skirting the Althorp estate and heading back to Holdenby. The route involves some footpaths, roads, tracks, grass and muddy fields and is around 9 miles long.

Sunday 31st

The walk will start 10.30 am from the Half Moon pub in Grendon, please park considerately around the village / along nearby roads. In the morning we will head out to Easton Maudit and back to pub for lunch (approx 4 miles). The second loop (start time to be confirmed) will head out to Castle Ashby and back, with the option of tea and cake at the Stables coffee shop before heading back to Grendon via the lakes (approx 3.5 - 4 miles).

We'll be at the pub catching up on our latest walks and plans that we have for walks for the rest of the month and beyond. Please come along and find out more about us - perhaps if you haven't been for ages, or you want to know someone who's going to be on your first walk. Please let us know if you're coming for the first time and we'll look out for you especially.

Sunday 7th
A figure of 8 walk starting from Stoke Bruerne a picturesque village by the Grand Union Canal. A figure of 8 walk is a walk of two halves, returning to the starting point at lunchtime and going on an afternoon walk from approximately the same location. This allows people to either walk the morning loop, afternoon loop or both.

Meet in the museum car park (signposted once you reach the village) at 10:30am for the morning/full day walk, or at 1pm for the afternoon walk. It costs £2.50 to park all day. There is no parking in the village as it is all double yellow lines. (Grid reference SP 743 497).

The morning walk is 6 miles long and goes across fields to the small villages of Alderton and Grafton Regis, and we head back to Stoke Bruerne along the canal, watching the boats navigate the flight of locks just before Stoke Bruerne. There are plenty of benches along the canal by the Navigation pub to eat packed lunches, and there an opportunity to have a drink in the pub before starting the afternoon walk.

The afternoon walk is 4 miles long and goes to the village of Shutlanger and goes above the Blisworth Tunnel and rejoins the canal by the tunnel entrance for a short stroll back to Stoke Bruerne.

Malvern Hills Trip - Feb 19th-22nd

I am looking at organising a trip in February and I need to understand who would be interested. My plan is for us to stay in lodges at the Woodside Country Park, Ledbury, Herefordshire. It would be roughly £70 each for the weekend (including usual food basics), if we can fill the lodges. There is a pub 2 miles away and about 4 more in Ledbury so we should be ok on that front. Regarding the walking, I was thinking of a walk in the Malvern Hills (Herefordshire/Worcestershire) on the Saturday, probably something towards Worcester on the Sunday and if anyone is staying over until Monday we could maybe head Tewkesbury way (Gloucestershire).

There are limited cabins available (2*6 berth and 1*4 berth) so I need to know fairly quickly if you are interested in case these get booked up. I will take names on a first come first served basis and will aim to book something up in the next couple of weeks.

Regards,

Kev

Sunday 28th
This is a 9 mile loop through parks and the town centre. We'll meet at 10.30am at the top of Overstone Road - near St Michael's car park and opposite the 'Boot and Shoe Quarter' sign (near where the Chron and Echo used to be for any one who has known Northampton for a few years).

This walk doesn't have a lunch stop, as we're planning to eat in the pub at the end.

First we will pass through the racecourse, then up through abington park, across the A45, down the River Nene to the Delapre estate. From there we'll head back through Far Cotton and the town centre. We aim to be back in town for around 2pm. For anyone wishing to, there is an option to have Sunday lunch at the nearby Lamplighter pub. If you want to stay for lunch, please let us know at the start of the walk on the day (veggie options are available!).

Parking - at the St Michael's Car Park in town which is free on Sundays.

A 7.5 mile circular walk from Tilton-on-the-Hill, which as a fun fact is the highest village in Leicestershire at 215m! There are views of the John O'Gaunt viaduct which spans 230m with 14 arches!

This will need to be booked in advance so please write in to letsgetreadytoramble@gmail.com  (Please note link disabled to reduce Spam !)  by Friday 18 March to reserve your place, or talk to Rachel. The sooner you can do this the better your chance of securing a place as they may be limited...This Sunday lunch has been tried and tested and is very yummy!

Sunday 3rd

Please note this walk has a 10am meet time.

The Corby Round is one of Northamptonshire's long distance footpaths. As the name suggests, its a route linking many local paths around the town of Corby. Rather than do all 34 miles in one go, we're planning to walk the route in 3 sections of 10, 13 and 11 miles respectively.

Corby round – part 1 – Geddington to Weldon.

As this is a LINEAR ie one way walk, please meet at the end of the walk at Weldon at 10am. Please meet next to the Londis shop on the High Street, Weldon after parking considerately in the roads nearby. From there we'll co-ordinate lifts to the start in as few cars as possible.

We will begin walking from the Queen Eleanor Cross in Geddington village centre, heading through Geddington chase to the village of Stanion. From there we will head to Brigstock, finding somewhere to eat our sandwiches before visiting the local pub. The last part of the walk will head to Weldon where the walk ends.

Saturday 16th

Sunday 17th

LGRTR Annual General Meeting

Dear all,

The date of the AGM of the Northants 20s to 40s walking group has been set as Saturday 16 July. This date was chosen on its availability for a number of those who regularly walk with the group. Please accept our apologies to those who are not able to make the date.

The plan is to book camping pitches at Wickstead Park in Kettering for Saturday 16 July, and then have a BBQ on the campsite. The following day there will be a walk in Isham starting at the later than usual time of 11am.

The AGMs are usually very informal, with the business part of the group kept to a minimum. It is your chance to have your say about the group, how it is run and volunteer to help run it, as well as a great social event – remembering some of the walks and weekends we've enjoyed over the year. Prizes will be awarded for best walk, best social and best weekend away. We'd also encourage you to take part in our 'guess the walk' photo competition and a walk caption competition.

The details:

The camping pitches are £25 per pitch. Please can you let us know by Monday 27 June if you'd like us to book you a pitch. We will ask you to make a bank transfer for the pitches ahead of booking them. More info here: http://wicksteedpark.org/stay-with-us/

If camping is not your thing / you are not planning on staying, but would like to come along to the BBQ and AGM please let us know. (It is likely that we'll be lighting the BBQ at around 7pm).

We will ask those coming along to bring along their own food to cook. We will also try and co-ordinate people bringing salads and puddings to share.

So, please let us know if you'd like to camp, if you can make it at all, and whether you've got any photos that you'd like to enter for either competition. (If you have any photos to be included, please can you email them directly to Belinda if you have her address, thank you).

We hope that you can make it!

With best wishes,

John Hadley, Chair and Belinda Cupid, Walks Secretary on behalf of the (current) Committee

We will be meeting at the Bear and Beignet ( http://bearandbeignet.com/ ) at Isham at 10am for breakfast. This pub is where the Wellingborough Zoo keeper would oftern take the resident lion Simba for a drink! We'll be leaving here at 11am prompt for a short walk around the area. The walk is approx 4.5 miles long. Passing the famous Weetabix factory and then back to Isham for a drink at the Lilacs pub.

For those of you coming to the AGM and camping at Wicksteed, this is a short drive / longer walk from the campsite. The plan is go directly from the campsite straight for some breakfast.

( Beignets are a bit like doughnuts and they are a speciality of New Orleans )

Please contact Vicki by the 10th July latest to reserve a breakfast place using the email on our contacts page or her personal email if you have it.

Wednesday 20th

Please park considerately around the village. Ideally near the George pub as this is the end point of the walk.

Link to pub

Meet outside the Church in the High Street, Tiffield at 7.30 pm.
(0.10 miles down the road from the pub)
This 3.8 mile walk recorded from GPS will take us across fields towards Caldecote and a loop back to the start. Unless we get a decent summer over the next five weeks I would recommend walking boots & long trousers as overgrown/wet in places. Stiles & gates en-route in various stages of disrepair. Plus some livestock. Some of this could be avoided on the night by extended use of B roads if required.
Aim to finish at 9 pm for a drink at the above mentioned pub.

Starting from just inside the entrance of Blisworth House on Church Lane, Blisworth (just behind the church), by the Ramblers Gazebo. The approximate Grid Reference is SP 726534 or see the map links below where the arrows show the location.

Our walk will begin by heading south along the canal, before turning west into fields towards the village of Gayton, and then heading back east towards Blisworth.  This is a great opportunity for non-members to sample a short ramble with our group.

For those wanting a day of walking, there will be another short walk starting from the same place at 2pm. (Please see the 'Guided walks' section of the Festival website).

Please use festival parking.

September
Sunday 4th

This is a an approx 13 mile linear walk. Meet at earlier time 10am at the end of the walk at the carpark of East Carlton Country Park. From here we'll take as few cars as possible back to the start of the walk at Weldon.

This is a picturesque route around the north east of Corby going past Kirby Hall and Rockingham along the way. We will stop somewhere along the route to eat our sandwiches and stop at one of the village pubs  for a drink.

The Corby Round is one of Northamptonshire's long distance footpaths. As the name suggests, it's a route linking many local paths around the town of Corby. The group is doing the route over three Sunday walks. Today's walk is Part Two.

Please note, shorts are not suitable for this walk.

Monthly Social

If you're thinking of getting back into walking after the summer holidays, or if you haven't done much walking before, come along to our monthly social to say Hello and find out what we're about.

We're meeting at the real ale pub near the centre of Northampton from 7pm for a drink, with the option of listening to the band from 8.45pm. Please note, the pub doesn't serve food, so eat before you come out. If you're new, look out for our 'walking boot' sign on the table to know you've got the right people!

Sunday 11th

Please park considerately around the town. At the time of press there is ample free parking next to the start on Sunday’s with no restrictions, but please double check the signs!! (Northampton Road, Towcester).

This 4 mile walk will start from the top of the Bury Mount in Towcester next to the new Council offices and Library at 10.30 am but feel free to arrive early to explore as there is also open access land opposite.

As part of the Heritage Open Day 2016 Weekend event ( http://www.heritageopendays.org.uk/ - not to be confused with English Heritage !). We will be walking to the church at Easton Neston and back.  Part of the walk will be on private land which belongs to the Russian Billionaire Leon Max. For those of us of a certain age may remember the estate was previously owned by Lord Hesketh who paid for his own F1 team in the 1970’s whose driver was James Hunt.

I have secured written permission from the local church warden enabling us to walk from the end of the public right of way in Hulcote to the church itself in the grounds of Easton Neston Park so we can visit inside the church as part of the open day event.

Depending on the weather and peoples' preferences on the day we can eat our pack ups in Hulcote or there may be refreshments at the church (see link to the Heritage Open Days above for updates). Or return to Towcester where there are numerous pub options or a Costa coffee to consider, or have an early finish as each leg of the walk is less than 2 miles giving a total of around 4 miles.

Corby round part 3.

The Corby Round is one of Northamptonshire's long distance footpaths. As the name suggests, its a route linking many
local paths around the town of Corby. Rather than do all 34 miles in one go, we have run a series of 3 walks over the last
few months. Its a good walk in itself, so please don't be put off if you haven't made parts 1 and 2!

Corby round – part 3 – East Carlton to Geddington - ~ 11 miles

As this is a LINEAR ie one way walk, please meet at the end of the walk in Geddington at 10am.

Please meet next to the Queen Eleanor Cross, in Geddington after parking considerately in the roads nearby. From there
we'll co-ordinate lifts to the start in East Carlton Country park in as few cars as possible. Please note, there is no pub
stop at lunchtime on  this walk.

We will begin walking from East Carlton country park. The route will take us through Willbarston and the hamlet of Pipedown.
In the afternoon we will pass through Great and Little Oakley in the south of Corby, before heading to our final destination
of Geddington. Here we have the option to celebrate the completion of the Round in the village pub before or after retrieving
cars left at the start!

Sunday 9th
Figure of eight walk, Farthingstone.

Meet at outside the the Kings Arms in Farthingstone at 10:30am. There are places to park in the village, not far from the pub.
The walk will be an 9 mile figure of eight walk ( 5m in the morning and 4m in the afternoon). A figure of 8 walk means that
you have the option to do the morning walk only, or the afternoon walk only, or walk all day! If you think you may want to
walk all day, please bring a packed lunch with you, as there wont be time to order anything in the pub.

The morning loop will be around 5 miles and head away from Farthingstone along the Macmillan Way until getting to Stowe
IX Churches which is the furthest point in the loop. We will then start to head back and go through Litchborough before
returning to Farthingstone for lunch around 12:30 .

The afternoon loop will be around 4 miles and will start around 1:15pm from the pub. We will head out of the village in the
opposite direction from the morning walk, along the Macmillan way. Joining up with the Knightley way, we will skirt around
the edge of Knightley Wood. After Mantles Heath we will start heading back to Farthingstone, arriving there around 3pm.

November
Sunday 6th
This s an 8 mile walk starting in Chipping Norton and including the Rollright Stones.

This walk is a little further afield so for those wishing to car share we will meet at Upon Park, Northampton (see map below) for departure at 9:30am. We will then drive to Chipping Norton, which is around an hour away.

We will park in the New Street car park, which I believe is free parking. The walk will start from here at 10:45am (if no hold ups along the way for those car sharing). Sunday 18th

As well as a 10 mile walk from Long Buckby train station starting at 10.30am (also timed to fit with the train timetable from Northampton), the plan is finish with a pub meal at 4pm. Please can you let Andy know by 18 November if you'd like to come along for food. (If you do not have Andy's email use our contacts email)

Please see the message about the walk that Santa has sent us:

Santa will once again be taking time out from his busy December schedule to lead a walk for our group.

As it's the Santa Hat Walk Santa hats are of course compulsory (or other Christmassy attire!). And this time it is a walk with a difference with not one but three pub stops planned with the last of these also featuring a Christmas meal!

But three pub stops is no good to me you are thinking, as I will need to drive home! Well, Santa has an answer for that because the start for the walk is Long Buckby station, so you can get the train (if you live in Northampton)

The train leaves Northampton at 10.00 and arrives at 10.11 but to allow for delays and for those coming by car we will start at 10.30 as usual.

The walk is 10 miles and takes us from Long Buckby to the outskirts of Watford via the canal and then to Ashby St Ledgers and our first pub stop.

From there we head through rolling countryside to the pretty village of Welford and the second pub! At some point before this there will also be a lunch stop, so bring your sandwiches as usual.

Then it's on to Long Buckby Wharf where we will stop at the New Inn (http://thenewinnbuckbywharf.co.uk ) for our final pub stop and our Christmas meal at this canalside pub. This is planned for 4pm to allow time for the walk any delays, including the pub stops!

If you would like to partake of the meal this will need to be booked so please contact Andy (Santa's representative) by November 18th so this can be booked.

After the meal it is just a short walk back to Long Buckby station and anyone not having the meal should be able to find their way!
