Photos Of This Trip

Friday 16th

All travel up from Northamptonshire and arrive between 7.45 and 9.00 with some of us nearly running in to some deer, having owls flying in front of us and then travelling down a road unusable for motors… arriving at a ford and getting the car stuck and having to push it out and then reversing it back 500 metres. However the rest of us made a slightly more conventional way to the hostel (even if the hostel was not conventional!)

We then wandered our way to The Ostrich where the locals were very welcoming and served us till silly o'clock in the morning. Andy's 39th Birthday was celebrated in style with Jamaican Jerk Butterfly Chicken with 'My Salad' and sauerkraut. Followed by sticky toffee pudding and five barrels of Abbots Ale.

Even then we hadn't noticed the error of our ways and stayed up till even sillier o'clock drinking in the large 'yoga' room. 'Tree' poses please everybody…

Saturday 17th

Considering the late night and excessive drinking last night we were all up very early, ready to drink camomile tea… with our buckwheat bread, followed by a course of prunes and grapefruit.

We set a new group record by leaving the hostel before 9.30 and headed for Wells-next-the-Sea. We parked near the lifeboat men just as the rain started to fall. And fall it did. At least we all had waterproofs…or did we!?!?!?!?! .

We had a steady stroll along the coast path before bearing right to the village of Warham, where we felt it only sociable to visit the local public house. Once again we found the locals very welcoming and felt the need to try the Whinhills cider (6.6abv) and the fruit punch.

We then continued along a rather muddy track until we found ourselves back in Wells, where some enjoyed the beverages of a teashop and others the fish and chips.

We then made our way back towards the beach and enjoyed an assault course through the forest and successfully lost two members of the group, oops!!!! We then found the beach, crossed some slightly damp salt marshes and found the sea, surprisingly close, only 3 miles out!!!

Some members of the group donned Speedos and goggles and we enjoyed a pleasant dip in the sea, some dipping further than others. Our boots and bags almost took a dip too. The beach proved perfect for Frisbee throwing and kite flying. We then walked the last of our 14 miles back along the beach. Unfortunately we were 10 minutes to late to visit the real ale shop on our way back to the hostel.

Dinner was a very civilised affair. James L cooked a superb Goulash, with dumplings and lots of veg, even the Czech's would be impressed!!! This was followed by stunning puddings by James T (apple crumble and bread & butter pudding). A number of the group were struggling to stay awake by this point….but hey, it's cowboy time. Off to the pub!!!!!!! After eating cake! (to celebrate Andy's birthday for the second time!)

Sunday 18th

The Sunday walk: A few of us were up early this morning to enjoy a morning jog! (Mark) And others decided to have a look round the village and take a look at the priory, something Castle Acre is famous for. The rest of us slept and got up to enjoy a nice healthy breakfast.

We then travelled to Hunstanton, or Hunny as it is more commonly known. The walk leader (Jayne) had planned a gentle stroll along the promenade followed by a blast along the sand to the top of the golf course, where some of the group partook of ice-creams, whilst others decided to 'take advantage' (Vicky's mum would have been proud!!). We then walked back along the river Hun, passed through Old Hunstanton back to Hunny.

We were greeted by the tranquil sounds of the local heavy metal group performing in the bandstand. Here we enjoyed our fish and chips while looking out to sea (well If you had binoculars anyway, I think the tide was 7 miles out by this point). Some of the group then took part in the crazy golf championships, the winner, who also happened to be keeping score (coincidence??) was Mark, congratulations, does this mean he is the most crazy of the group? I'll let you decide. Meanwhile others decided to enjoy the beach and enjoyed playing yet more Frisbee and kite flying.

A very enjoyable (and flat) weekend.
