Day 3 - The Boys - Triglav - by John

Up at 7am for breakfast, to catch the 8:18am train from Most na Soci to Bohinj. The ticket office was like something out of the Railway Children! When getting out at the other end we went to look for the bus times and ….. a bus pulled up that took us straight to the start of the walk! Into the supermarket for last minute supplies and then we were off.

Up through the village to another gorge, paying our 400 SIT to get in. Past the elephant head rock for a steady 3km walk along the valley bottom, before hitting the forest and the proper climbing up a very steep zig zag track. We were going to stay on this until we reached 1800m, only breaking for alpine pasture and cliff edges. We saw the trees changing from very large and tall beech and spruce lower down, to smaller larch and miniature pine only 6' high and growing like a bush higher up.

Finally as the trees petered out we got our first view of Triglav (with it's head in the clouds) and the hut where we were stopping that night - still a long way away though! This was where the mountain climbing started. We stopped briefly to get water from another mountain hut and passed the highest alpine pasture in Slovenia (at 1400m) in the valley below. The next section, to the col below the hut (2000m), contained our first bit of ironwork protection. At the col we met 2 Americans who had been walking in the mountains for the past few days and had not seen the top (of Triglav) all the time they had been up here, so we didn't hold out much hope of a clear view from the top.

A steady slog got us to the Dom Planika Hut at 2400m. We booked in and showed our passports. Luckily most of the staff spoke good English. Only problem was that although the hut was not that expensive, we were used to very cheap Slovenian prices and some of us had only bought £30 in SIT - luckily Mark had a bit more, but it turned out we would only have just enough to pay the taxi on the last day, when we were trying to get back to the station, but that's to come later.

We got into our room and sorted out our stuff. Mark said he was going to follow the path up to Triglav until he got to the clouds when we got to the hut was only a further 100m up, on easy paths. But we were to find out the following day that he ended up going ¾ of the way up on some very exposed paths.

Meanwhile, Andy and I, before having a beer, went and looked for the showers, only to find there were none and the WC which was outside, over a cliff edge - a hole in the ground with a bucket to flush them with!!

When Mark got back we had dinner - a vegetable soup (with beef stock and lumps of beef in), very nice, and I had a sausage with some mustard. To bed by 9:30pm with the rain beating down on the window and lightening further down the valley. Hoping for a clear day tomorrow.
